California Fee Reduction and Fee Category Change

Changes to the California Paint Stewardship Program operated by PaintCare took effect on July 1, 2022.

The PaintCare fee assessed on the sale of architectural coatings (e.g., house paint, stain, and varnish) in California was reduced. In addition, the container size categories were adjusted to include two gallon containers in the one gallon category.

The adjusted fee structure is as follows:

Container SizeFee Prior to July 1New Fee
Half pint or smaller$0.00$0.00
Larger than half pint up to smaller than 1 gallon$0.35 $0.30
1 gallon$0.75 ---
1–2 gallons---$0.65
Larger than 1 gallon up to 5 gallons$1.60 ---
Larger than 2 gallons up to 5 gallons---$1.50

Paint retailers should have updated their billing and point-of-sale systems to show the adjusted fee and category change by July 1. Prior to July 1, PaintCare staff mailed updated point-of-sale educational materials for paint consumers reflecting the new fee to all California paint retailers and called each store to alert them to the change.

Please educate your customers of this fee reduction and contact your regional PaintCare representative if you have any questions.

Point of sale materials are available at no charge to all retailers. Order by using our online order form or by calling (855) PAINT09. Contact info@paint.org to request materials in a different language.
